Fans call on JYP to take down the contract
Right after TWICE became a new endorser for Scarlett Whitening, many TWICE fans are calling on JYP Entertainment to terminate the contract.

Scarlett Whitening was launched by actress and singer Felicya Angelista, it sells various type of scrubs, toners, lotions, serums, and some merchandise which meant to whiten pores and skin.
According to an ingredients analysis from COSMILY, the “Brightly Ever After” range of serums and creams contains “Whitening” compounds such as nicotinamide, ascorbyl glucoside, and glutathione that is designed to “improve skin tone“.
Studies show nicotinamide (also known as niacinamide) lightens skin by inhibiting melanin cell transfer, while ascorbyl glucoside (a vitamin C derivative) is proven to inhibit melanin formation.
Glutathione, is mainly used to lighten skin that has darkened over time. Some of these ingredients appear in many other Scarlett Whitening products, including their acne cream and their “Glowtening” serum.
So far, TWICE is endorsing two limited edition sets from Scarlett Whitening, both of which include products containing those ‘Whitening’ ingredients.
Currently, many followers are calling on JYP Entertainment to cancel the endorsement contract, and also stop TWICE’s promotion of Scarlett Whitening merchandise.

Last year, cosmetics giants like Johnson & Johnson and Unilever pulled their skin whitening products after the #BlackLivesMatter movement ignited contentions about colorism and racism. No doubt that Skin lightening products are a really sensitive products that can easily provoke netizens all over the world.
TWICE fans all over the world concerned that this promotion will lead to many disappointments knowing that many of TWICE fans have a dark skin.
In a mass email to JYP Entertainment, fans state, “We find it unethical that TWICE is promoting a brand with skin whitening products, knowing that they have fans with darker skin complexions.”
We ask you to please take this into consideration and think carefully about dropping out of this brand deal/promotion as it can be harmful to not only TWICE members’ image, but it can be deeply hurtful to the fans they have.
Other ONCE’s describe how the endorsement of skin whitening treatment and products will later on further the need to be white in order to looks beautiful rather than being who they really are.
Some others just show disappointment of this skin whitening endorsement, as lately TWICE just release an English-language single “The Feels”, to attract global audience that includes all ethnicities.
However, ONCE’s Indonesia think that the endorsement is not a big deal as this products are not literally lighten the pigment, it’s only brighten and make the skin glow. These fans say that this products are widely used as a way to restore skin to its original color after sun exposure.
Other than that, some of them also says that Agnes Monica, Indonesian celebrities who are considered darker skinned also have promoted Scarlett Whitening in the past.
Some others pointing out Scarlett Whitening’s before-after picture that just show the products lightening effects to people’s skin and denounce the normalization of skin whitening product.
JYP Responds
Currently, JYP Entertainment have deleted their initial tweet on @JYPETWICE regarding the endorsement and putting this into consideration about this issue, hope to give a clearer explanation about this controversy.
