Director Hwang writing the script in 2008
During the press conference for Squid Game, Director Hwang Dong-huk shared that he first wrote the script in 2008. Back in 2008, Director Hwang was in debt, just like participants of Squid Game.
And He think, “If there were a game like this, I would have participated in it.” So he already experience the feeling to be those participants in his real life.
The script was completed in 2009 but because the plot is so brutal and unconventional, many investors refuse to put their money into this korean drama productions.
The Posters Hint the creator behind the game
As we can see from this poster, all the participants look stress and serious, but one old man looks grind and having an evil smile in this poster, not only an evil smile, he is the only old guy participate in this brutal game.

Everyone have their background shown on the first episode, and all of them are having problem with money. But the creator never say anything about money, he only say that he join to reminiscing the past and enjoy the games, not the rewards.

In the beginning we can’t see the paintings on the wall as it was covered by beds all around it. But we can see it clearly afterwards as the participants decreasing in number.

When police officer Jun-Ho found the Squid Game archive room, he opened the 2020 player book hoping to find the file on his lost brother.
But when he looked through the players in the current games, the background of number 001 was gone and the file started at 002. This is because the creator wouldn’t need background information on himself.
The uniforms color symbolize conformity
We can see clearly from this view that the director choose the color wisely as the participants wear green jump suit and the soldiers hot pink jump suit.
Director Hwang dressed the participants in green jump suit as it reminded him of himself during Korean high school, and this uniform just cause the feeling of conformity as they all back to their high school student memories.
The soldier was given the hot pink color is because this pink color is the total opposite of green on colour wheel arts. It is a clear message that both team are against one another.
Both of the team are dressed in the same colour to erase their identity, they also called each one by their numbers, not their names.

Oh Il-nam’s name
In Korean, Oh Il-nam’s name literally means “number one man”, “il” (일) means one, and “nam” (남) means “man” in Korean. This refers to number one in terms of wealth, mind, and power.
Just like His name, he foreshadowing the master mind behind all this brutal and illegal game that cause hundreds people to die like an animal in a children’s game.
Player 001 never get scan during the game
If you look closer, you will realize that Player 001 never get scan and detected by the animatronic girl. Everyone scaned having outlined in green, but player 001 never got scaned.
Player 001 know what will happen and how to win
We can see clearly that player 001 don’t try to find any partner during the marble games, while many people worry and scared to be shot to death if they don’t get their partner, player 001 just do the total opposite, he just calmly sit down on the corner and not try to find anyone to play games with.

We never know how can player 001 located on the highest bed and totally safe from all of the riot. Nobody even come near to him . The front man focus at player 001 and listen to whatever he said. As he felt scared, he just suddenly turn everything’s on and stop the riot.

Deok-su jumped off the overpass to escape and actually being pull down from the glass bridge in his death
In episode 2, Jang Deok Su was betrayed by his former right hand when he actually wish they can just grab the money from the squid game without need to play the game. However, it ended up bad as his former right hand surrender him to his debtor. After kill the betrayer, he jumped off the bridge.
Deok su back in the game and as they play the glass floor stepping stone challenge, he didn’t want to take a risk of choosing the glass floor as it might lead to his own death. However, Han Mi Nyeo come to him, pretend she want to be ahead of him and choose the next floor. She ended up hug him tightly and pull off deoksu and herself together to their own death.
Ali steal his boss' money and got his own marble stolen by Sang Woo that leads to his death
We saw that Ali by force took his boss money because his boss refused to pay him his wage. He confronted his boss and accidentally ended up pushing him into a machine where the latter’s arm got stuck. As the money fell, he pick it up and run with the money.
In Episode 6, Ali and Sang Woo decided to pair together for the games just to find out that they had to play against one another, with the consequences of the loser death. They are so close as Sang Woo helped him many times before. However, right before Ali was about to win, Sang woo tricked him by stealing his marble and swap it with stones that leads to Ali’s death.
Sang woo tried to suicide in a wet suit and ended up committing suicide in wet suit
Sang-woo attempted to drown himself in the bathtub right after they got back to their own normal life from the first game. However, just for his surprise, he got second chance when someone rang the doorbell and invited him back to the squid game.
The last challenge requires all the player to kill one another. This time, Sang Woo faces Gi hun, his childhood friend. Gi Hun win against Sang Woo in the fight, yet Gi hun wouldn’t kill Sang Woo. Sae-byeok threatened a man with a knife on the throat and ended up killed by a stab on her throat
Kang Sae Byeok was cheated by someone who said he was an investigator and someone who is able to move her brother from north to south korea. However, he is just a scam and as she got furious, she threatened him with a knife on his throat after throwing a hot coffee on his face.
Sae Byeok survived the 5th games with fatal wounded from the broken glass that hit her stomach. Gi Hun try to help by calling out the staff to help her. However, when Sang Woo realized that Sae Byeok is fatally wounded, he decided to kill her by stab her on the neck.
Oh Il Nam talk with Gi Hun and they ended up talking again in the last episode
We saw that on episode 2, Oh Il Nam talk with Gi Hun in front of the convenient store and eating together. Oh Il Nam influence Gi Hun to get back to the game as it is more torturing to live outside with all the problems rather than inside the game.
In the last episode, one year after the game is over and Gi Hun won, Oh Il Nam invited Gi Hun to come to his bed chamber and they meet up and talking together again. Oh Il Nam telling Gi Hun why he created the games and how people are actually doing it voluntarily, so don’t need to feel guilty for those who died.
It worked, and Gi Hun continuing his life by taking back sae byeok brother and ask sang woo mother to take care of him. He also give huge amount of money to Sang Woo’s mother just exactly as Sang Woo’s wish before he suicide.
The stairs inspired by M.C Escher’s Relativity
We can see this stairs from episode one before the games started, this huge stairs with bright cheer colour just create a feeling of cheerful and happiness in the midst of chaos.
Director Hwang revealed that he was inspired by a lithograph print by Dutch artist M.C. Escher. The lithograph print is titled Relativity, and it illustrates a world where the laws of gravity are different from the real world.
456 people really participated
In the beginning of Squid Game, there were a total of 456 participants. The participants were played by real actors that come from many nations, not just korean.
The Director wants this movie to be as realistic as possible, so he really put it up together with all the participants and also create the huge design and set of this playground in reality.
