Wild tea has been cultivated here as far back as the mid-300’s BC while green tea was introduced to Korea from China in the 600’s AD during the Silla Dynasty. During the Goryeo Dynasty, it was mainly farmed at the temples and the royal court, while in the Joseon Dynasty, it began to grow naturally in Jeolla provinces and Gyeongsang provinces.

This gorgeous fields of Daehan Daewon Green tea plantations in Boseong is definitely one of the best place to dive head-first into Korean tea culture. After paid $4 and arrived at the entrance, you will be welcome with the lush green, curvy, beautifully lined rows of tea fields tucked between mountains and cedar trees was an overwhelmingly magnificent site. Not only do your eyes have sensory overload, but the scent of the green tea was in the air.

There is one particular area marked with a sign that reads “photo spot” that has the well-groomed and maintained tea plants for the best photo opportunities. even during winter seasons  No doubt that this tea plantation is also a filming location for a Korean Drama.

This green tea plantation featured as a filming site in some korean dramas such as “Summer Scent (2002),” “Legend of the Blue Sea (2017),” and “The Rebel (2017).”

The green tea plantations here provides a really great visual for travelers and locals, no doubt that this was featured as a filming site for many korean dramas. Green lush of bushes with a steep, rows of tea leaves right next to each other on the hills will definitely heal your soul and clear your mind.

If you plan to hike this up this high heels, especially during summer time, you might need to bring with you some water and a fan. However, I promise you that the views up there is really worth the hike. Close by the fields you will find the Tea Museum of Korea, Where you can learn all about tea harvesting process and learn about some tea plants from neighbor country.

Drinking tea, used to be an elite classes ritual that signified wealth and prosperity. However, in modern times, tea has become an integral part of korean culture. There is a tea-tasting ceremony held at the neighboring Tea Museum. After observing the drinking rituals, you can practice to prepare and serve some tea under the observation of the experts.

You might wondering what makes Korean green tea different from other varieties of tea out there. If you are a beginner in tea, then you will not realize the different flavor this green tea has. Korean green tea has the ability to neutralize bitter taste, and soften the sweet taste.

That’s why Korean green tea ice cream is really delicious and even if you had it in latte, is also taste really good. You can find a lot of green tea merchandise on sale at the shops around the entrance, from face mask, snacks and bibimbap.

Botjae Dawon Tea Plantation

About a 5 minute walk out of the entrance to the right is another tea plantation named Botjae Dawon. This place has more of a mom and pop farm feel to it compared to the most famous Daehan green tea field next door.

We walked the grounds in about 10 minutes. The good thing was it was free, however, the place was really run down and not worth visiting. Afterward, we decided to get some more green tea, which was the best decision we could have made. The green tea ice cream at Botjae was surprisingly better! So if you are only planning to try once, come here for the green tea ice cream!

This amazing cafe has been featured a lot in many instagrammer as well as Boseong travellers. This cafe basically sits on a hill overlooking the most beautiful green tea plantations in south korea. You can expect to get a handful of green tea flavored items here.

Botjae Green Da-hyang is a cafe located about 5 minutes from the green tea plantation. It is specifically located inside the Botjae Green Tea Market. This café uses the freshest produce from the plantations nearby and offers a wide variety of green tea flavored desserts, you’ll be spoilt for choices.

With a modern interior and views overlooking the vast plains, this quaint café is a must go for all the green tea lovers out there. Once you’re done with your cuppa, slide your way over to level 1 or 3 for more green tea goodness.

Types of Green Tea in Boseong Green Tea Field

There is at least 5 type of green tea here:

  • Woojeon Tea: made from young tea leaves collected in April.
  • Sejak or Jakseol Tea (The most popular tea): made from leaves collected in Early May
  • Jungjak Tea: made from leaves plucked in the middle of May
  • Daejak or Ipha Tea: made from leaves plucked in the end of May.
  • Yeop Tea or Yeop Cha: made from leaves picked in July.

Best time to visit Boseong Green Tea Field

Summer Season

The best time to visit here is on Summer season, between May to July, with the beginning of May marking the annual green tea festival and June to July also provide stunning conditions and great escape from the hectic capital city. Even though you might find that the weather will be humid especially on the end of July.

Winter Season

Green tea fields are transformed into a gigantic village of snowy bushes and also filled with lights from December through January.

Hanok Tea House

Chunwoon Seo-ok is a traditional Korean Hanok Tea house located in Boseong-ri, Boseong-eup, near Boseong-gun Office. It is very nice to look around the garden as the remodeling of the 150-year-old cultural asset makes the hanok building itself antique. Filled with trees, flowers, and stone pieces.

The Tea Museum of Korea was built to preserve Korea’s tea culture and celebrate the history of Boseong tea, which dates back as far as the Baekje Era. Each of the three floors of the museum is unique and focuses on a different aspect of tea. On the first floor is the Tea Culture Hall, which explains the process of tea production through graphic panels, videos, and dioramas.

The Tea History Hall on the second floor exhibits tea wares and tools from different periods in history, showcasing the evolution of tea culture over time. The third floor houses the Tea Life Hall, which is dedicated to education and hands-on experiences and gives visitors a chance to discover the tea cultures of Korea, China, Japan, and Europe as well as various tea tools from other countries.

Visitors can further delve into the world of tea by visiting the Tea Making Workshop, which is equipped with facilities to make different types of green teas.

Yulpo Beach

This small beach town is a 10-minute ride by bus or cab from the tea fields. This place is great to see the sunset. Other than that, you can also find Yulpo Haesu Nokchatang, which actually a bathhouse that overlooking the Yulpo sea.

Other than having the great sea view, Yulpo Haesu Nokchatang also has salt water pumped in for treatment baths and green tea baths. The spa is open from 6 am to 8 pm.

Bibong Dinosaur Park Museum

If you go with your children then you can visit this nearby attractions with your family to enjoy the dinosaur theme museum and take some beautiful moment and picture there.

How to Get to Boseong Green Tea Fields

From Seoul to Boseong Green Tea FIelds

It takes about 5-6 hours from Seoul to Boseong, Here is how you can go to Boseong from Seoul:

  1. Get the bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal. 
  2. Take the train from Yongsan Station to Boseong Station.

From Busan to Boseong Green Tea Fields

It takes about 3-4 hours from Busan to Boseong, Here is how you can go to Boseong from Seoul:

  1. Get the bus from Busan Sasang to Boseong Bus Terminal.
  2. Take the S-Train from Busan Station to Boseong Station.

From Gwangju to Boseong Green Tea Fields

It takes about 2 hours from Gwangju to Boseong, Here is how you can go to Boseong from Seoul:

  1. Get the bus from Gwangju Bus Terminal to Boseong Bus terminal.
  2. Take the Train from Gwangju Songjeong Station to Boseong Station.

Recommend Route

I recommend to using Bus to get here, as taking the intercity bus is the cheapest and easiest way to get here.

After you reach Boseong Bus terminal, there is a local bus running specially to this plantations from the bus stop. You gonna look for the sign “녹차밭 ” at the terminal and get in to enjoy about 20 minutes ride to the plantation place.

However, if you choose to use train to go to Boseong, then look for bus number 70 or 72 to the Tea Fields, it will take about 30 minutes from the station to the plantation place.

Where to Stay in Boseong Green Tea Fields

I would recommend Jinrae Lee’s Traditional Hanok House and Golmangtae Pension if you prefer to stay here. I think these two is the best place to stay.
